Context :

BBC Media Action uses various forms of media and communications to tackle poverty and contribute to long-term change in some of the world’s poorest places.  To achieve this, we partner with civil society, local media and governments to:

  1. Produce creative programmes based on robust research in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences around key development issues.
  2. Strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure.

 

BBC Media Action in Nepal is producing a programme called Miljuli Nepali aimed at the communities affected by the recent earthquake.

It provides lifesaving information about health, hygiene, shelter and the protection of vulnerable groups. It also promotes positive role models within society to encourage greater resilience within the affected communities and gives listeners a voice to share stories, ask questions and express their needs and concerns.

Job purpose

Reporting to the Milijuli Nepali senior producer, the radio producers will be responsible for scripting and presenting the programme, producing reports from the field and putting forward ideas and treatments in editorial meetings for themes to cover in the short and medium term.  Radio producers will also be responsible for recognising the needs of the earthquake affected communities and how to use a varied range of radio techniques to pass on that information to the audience in an engaging way.

Main Duties

  1. Identify the needs of the affected community by using Humanitarian sources, formal research and local contacts in affected areas.  
  2. Contribute original ideas and treatments for content during daily editorial meetings.
  3. Conduct interviews in a sensitive way with a wide range of people on location.
  4. Produce radio packages ready for transmission on a diverse variety of issues
  5. Write the script and present the programme from the studio or out on location. 
  6. Provide training and mentoring to radio producers from community radio stations on the most effective way of producing useful, timely  and engaging information for the affected community.
  7. Ensure all content meets the required technical standards, BBC editorial policy and BBC values.
  8. Other project activities as necessary.

Essential skills and experience

  1. Experience of producing and presenting radio programmes for Nepalese audiences.
  2. A strong and engaging broadcasting voice.
  3. Radio production skills, including producing editorial content, technical recording and post-production skills.
  4. Demonstrable creative ability.
  5. Strong understanding of BBC editorial values and their application in programme making.
  6. Well-developed understanding of key development needs of Nepal and the issues facing earthquake affected communities.
  7.  A proven track record in producing engaging radio content for local audiences.
  8. Ability to work on own initiative and organise time effectively within a range of often conflicting deadlines. 
  9. The ability to forge strong working relations quickly and gain the trust of project stakeholders, including partners.
  10. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  11. Extensive knowledge of how social media can be used to support the goals of Milijuli Nepali. 
  12. A good standard of written and spoken English.
