Direct Reports: N/A
Close Working Relationships: Director of Implementation Research, Senior Mental Health Research Manager, Reproductive, Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health (RMNCH) Research Manager; Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs) Research Manager; Director of Healthcare Design, Healthcare Directors and program leads at Achham and Dolakha.
Must-have Characteristics:
- A Master’s degree in a social science, public health, or related field
- Minimum of one year of experience in core qualitative research in the healthcare sector, conducting data collection and supporting analysis with and without computer software packages (e.g., coding in NVivo, Atlas.ti, Dedoose)
- A strong motivation and ability to live and work in remote Nepal for extended periods of time
- Fluency in written and spoken Nepali and English.
Big 3 Responsibilities:
- Qualitative methods capacity building: Ensure the tools for qualitative research are drafted, updated and piloted; coordinate and align with multiple team members prior to data collection; and conduct training on qualitative methods where relevant.
- Qualitative methods implementation: Conduct qualitative data collection, provide feedback for ethical data collection and strengthen program delivery; assist in ensuring integrity of qualitative data, including recording, transferring, storing and usage of data.
- Qualitative data analysis and dissemination: Support in analysis, and write-up of qualitative data to further NHN’s approach to public sector healthcare systems design, research, and policy advocacy; and assist in disseminating the findings, and highlighting impact and personal experiences and stories from our work.
Areas of Responsibility:
The Qualitative Research Officer will provide qualitative research and analytic support, and is responsible in carrying the following areas of responsibility:
1. Qualitative research preparation, including capacity building. Ensure the tools for qualitative research are drafted, updated and piloted; coordinate and align with multiple team members prior to data collection; and conduct training on qualitative methods where relevant.
- Assist in drafting relevant tools (e.g. In-depth interview (IDI) guide,, Focus group discussion (FGD) guide, observation guide) for qualitative research around RMNCH, Mental Health and Non-Communicable Diseases;
- Assist with translation of tools and instruments for quality improvement and research from Nepali to English and English to Nepali (e.g., surveys, questionnaires, consent forms, etc.);
- Pilot tools coordinating with clinical and program team, support in finalizing the tools prior to actual data collection;
- Liaise with different team members to align on the research timeline and plan for qualitative data collection;
- Work collaboratively with other research analysts and program team to align qualitative research work to support understanding of programmatic component;
- Work with Qualitative Research Manager to provide regular and re-fresher qualitative ethics and methods trainings and workshops to all Nyaya Health Nepal team members;
- Support in developing and adapting qualitative research design and methods trainings that can be used in collaboration with other partners, such as the Nepal Health Research Council and NHN’s Implementation Research Unit;
- Manage and coordinate logistics for qualitative data collection and training working collaboratively with multiple team members;
- Support in preparing submission of IRB applications and other materials related to qualitative research conducted by Nyaya Health Nepal, as needed.
2. Qualitative research implementation. Conduct qualitative data collection, provide feedback for ethical data collection and strengthen program delivery; assist in ensuring integrity of qualitative data, including recording, transferring, storing and usage of data.
- Conduct qualitative data collection: Collect data using qualitative research methods, oversee data quality and data management, including appropriate storage and data management protocols;
- Accompany members of the Community Health team on home visits, and engage with clinical team at the facility regularly in order to stay grounded with the care delivery component of Nyaya Health Nepal’s work;
- Maintain regular field notes from observation and interaction relevant to the research and program;
- Assist in gathering data to help measure and improve the patient experience in seeking and receiving care at Nyaya Health Nepal sites (e.g., through patient experience surveys);
- Ensure ethical conduct of research by following protocols approved by institutional review boards, and also guide the organization to think critically about putting people at the center of our work and research
3. Qualitative data analysis and dissemination. Support in analysis, and write-up of qualitative data to further NHN’s approach to public sector healthcare systems design, research, and policy advocacy; and assist in disseminating the findings, and highlighting impact and personal experiences and stories from our work.
- Assist in ensuring that transcription and translation work is of high quality by working very closely with transcriber and translator;
- Conduct preliminary qualitative data analysis together with Qualitative Research Manager;
- Support write-up findings and results for Nyaya Health Nepal’s care delivery teams, government partners, donors and funders, and for publications;
- Summarize field observation from qualitative data collection, provide feedback to the team to strengthen data collection process and program delivery.
Location:
You will spend 40% of time in Achham, 40% in Dolakha and 20% in Kathmandu
