The Government of Nepal (GoN) is committed to reducing maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity by ensuring the availability, access to and utilization of skilled care at every birth, reflected in the National Skilled Birth Attendants (SBA) policy (2006) that specifically identifies the importance of new cadres of professional Midwives as a crucial Human Resource for safe motherhood.
Since 2010 UNFPA has been working with Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) and other partner agencies advocating for the initiation of midwifery education, and for the recognition of the professional cadre as a key human resource to address maternal mortality and morbidities. UNFPA Country Office, in its 7th programme cycle (2013- 2017) is working with MoHP to support the Government in initiating the Midwifery education and cadre and contributing to the UNFPA Outcome 1, Output 1, Indicator on Midwifery i.e. Number of national/ regional nurse/ midwifery training institutions supported by UNFPA with curricula based on World Health Organization/ International Confederation of Midwives essential competencies adopted & implemented.
The 25th April earthquake caused large scale damage and many casualties in country that shifted the priority focus for both the government and the partners in health. Based on the urgent need UNFPA is currently supporting emergency reproductive Health interventions in the fourteen most affected districts with a special focus on implementing the Minimal Initial Service Package, including EmONC.
Scope of Services:
The Midwifery Technical officer will provide technical assistance to MoHP, NNC, MIDSON and related professional institution to advance Midwifery education and professional cadres in the country. S/he will work in close collaboration with MoHP, UN agencies (especially WHO), other External Development Partners (EDPs), professional bodies (especially NNC, MIDSON) and national institutions involved in the sector.
