Friends of Shanta Bhawan, Nepal was founded in 1983 by American doctor Dick Matron in Patan, Lalitpur.
The name originates from Shanta Bhawan Hospital, initially a maternity ward, which is currently known as Patan Hospital. In Nepali, Shanta Bhawan means “Palace of Peace”.
In 1984, the center moved to its current location in Jorpati, Kathmandu. The organization was initially funded by Friends of Shanta Bhawan, California, USA.
From 1997-2011, the American Himalayan Foundation, another US-based organization, funded the center.
The organization, under new management, operated on a self-sustaining model from 2011-2016.
In 2012, the Rotary Club of Patan Durbar Square, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Tenmabashi, Osaka, Japan, donated medical equipment, including X-ray, USG, ECG, and blood analyzer machines. This contribution allowed for the expansion of FSB’s services.
Since 2016, FSB Nepal has partnered with HealthRight International for fiscal sponsorship.
At present, FSB Nepal is interested in developing new long-term partnerships to further support its mission of providing quality health care services to the underprivileged communities in Northeast Kathmandu.
The clinic is registered with the Government of Nepal Office, Register No. 111/2047 and the Social Welfare Council, Register No. 282/1990.
