Job Description

VACANCY: COUNTRY DIRECTOR – NEPAL

Humane Society International is seeking a Country Director – Nepal (Independent Contractor). The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a key public spokesperson for the organization on public policy issues.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Encouraging lawmakers to enact an omnibus of animal welfare statutes; defeating bills that do not protect animals and managing relationships with lawmakers and other advocates;
  • Conducting media interviews, giving speeches, engaging in public debates and other public speaking roles to advance animal protection public policies;
  • Collaborating with HSI programme directors to develop strategies and implement tactics in advancement of animal protection issues in Nepal;
  • Building public support for policy priorities through grassroots engagement and with the media;
  • Mapping stakeholders, allies and various bodies who play a role in promoting animal welfare nationally;
  • Promoting and lobbying for the inclusion of anti-cruelty measures in the political manifestos of the key/leading political parties during parliamentary elections;
  • Documenting case studies of animal cruelty which could be used as proof on the existence of animal cruelty, analysis of existing policies and laws highlighting the lacunas and gaps, and production of documentaries as lobbying tools;
  • Developing and managing campaign materials such as LTE’s, op-eds, reports, factsheets and online material;
  • Other duties as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in a related discipline or equivalent work experience required;
  • Minimum five years’ experience in public policy advocacy, public policy research or legislative affairs;
  • Superior written and oral communication skills, as well as strong research and advocacy skills and command over Nepali, English and Hindi;
  • Must possess strong reading and critical thinking skills;
  • Knowledge of animal protection issues required;
  • Working knowledge of local policymaking, structure and legislative processes;
  • Proficient computer skills and ability to exercise discretion;
  • Maintain enthusiasm and strategic thinking to help shape the campaign;
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills with demonstrated flexibility and the ability to manage multiple and often changing priorities while meeting time sensitive deadlines and deliverables;
  • A high level of confidence, integrity, interpersonal skills, and a professional presence for effectively interacting with and influencing others;
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as the ability to handle complex situations and demonstrate sound judgment and problem-solving;
  • Must be able to travel.
